Frequently asked questions

What is EventChatter?

EventChatter is a messaging service that allows all of the Twitter users who are part of the same event to monitor the event chatter and hold a live conversation.

How does EventChatter work?

EventChatter creates a real-time stream of messages about an event, allowing users to participate in a single, live conversation about the event they're attending. Not only can users create messages about the event directly on EventChatter, but EventChatter also pulls messages from attendees during an event. EventChatter also searches Twitter for any mention of the event, but highlights messages from attendees of the event. So, if you are attending the DEMO conference, it's easy to watch and be part of the global conversation; you can talk about the conference on Twitter, or simply say things like "> This technology is incredible" during a demo, and you'll join the chatter.

What are events?

Events can be anything a large group of people will attend that takes place during a certain time, such as a conference like South by Southwest. On EventChatter, all created events have an event page. The event page allows users to join in on the live conversation, regardless of when the event is taking place, and also aggregates any messages from Twitter before, during, and after the event.

How do I join an event from Twitter?

Use the following method to list yourself in the event directory if you're attending an event:

  1. Follow @eventchatter on Twitter.
  2. When you know you'll be attending an event, send EventChatter a message with the hash tag of the event, e.g. '@eventchatter #twtrcon'.
  3. If the events exists in EventChatter's directory, we'll direct message you to confirm you're added. Otherwise, we'll ask you to create it.
  4. Whenever you use the event's hashtags or keywords in a message, your message will show up in the chatter.
  5. When the event is live, you can also use '>' in front of any message to have it show up in the chatter, if you don't feel like using hashtags.

Does EventChatter pull in all of the messages I create during an event?

EventChatter gives you the ability to quickly push messages to the chatter about an event you're attending, without requiring you to use tags or keywords. When an event you're attending is live, simply put '>' in front of any of your messages (e.g. '> Steve Ballmer just walked on stage'), and EventChatter will pull it into the conversation. This has the advantage of allowing you to quickly push to the event fire hose, without needing to continuously use hashtags in every message. You can, of course, still use hash tags.

How do time zones work on EventChatter?

All events will be listed in the time zone you have set on your Twitter account, and this time zone is also used when you create an event. If two similar events take place in multiple time zones, such as a TV show, simply give your event a descriptive title, such as "24 (EST)". We're working on a way to make this easier.

Can I embed an event on my website?

Yes, you can. Grab the EventChatter widget from any event page.

Can I use EventChatter from my mobile phone?

Not yet, but you will be able to soon!

Does EventChatter make money?

Not right now - we just wanted to solve a problem we see that affects a lot of Twitter users.
